Short answer: Fly into John Wayne Airport (SNA) if you can. It is about 11 miles from the house, roughly 20 minutes with no traffic. If your airline flies to it, Long Beach (LGB) is just as good: about 14 miles, and rideshare pickup is right outside the door. Use LAX when it is the only nonstop or saves real money for a group. It is about 33 miles away, roughly 45 minutes with no traffic and often much longer. One warning for SNA: no scheduled airline may land there between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. (8 a.m. on Sundays), so a badly delayed evening flight can end up somewhere else.

Ontario (ONT) is about 48 miles and an hour away with no traffic. It only makes sense if it is the one airport with a fare or schedule that works.
John Wayne (SNA): the default
SNA is the closest airport and has the widest airline list of the two small ones. The airport's airline page lists 12 passenger carriers, including Air Canada and WestJet for Canadian visitors. App rideshares pick up on the top levels of parking structures A2 and B2, and on the upper level of the Terminal C structure next to ticketing. Drop-off is at the Departures curb.
The catch is the curfew. The county's access rules bar scheduled airline departures from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. and arrivals from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., with both pushed to 8 a.m. on Sundays. The airport director can allow exceptions for weather, mechanical or air-traffic delays, but you should not count on one. If your only SNA option lands at 10:40 p.m., an earlier flight, or LGB, is the safer booking. The same rule means there are no red-eye departures from SNA. The first flights leave at 7 a.m.
Long Beach (LGB): small and quick
LGB is the easiest arrival on this list if your airline serves it. The airport's destinations page shows Southwest (with the most routes, including Honolulu and Maui), Hawaiian (Honolulu and Maui), Delta (Salt Lake City) and Alaska (Seattle). Uber and Lyft pick up on the outer curb in front of the terminal, and taxis wait at a stand next to Parking Structure A. The drive to the house is about 14 miles.
The short airline list is the limit. If none of those four flies from your city, the choice is between SNA and LAX.
LAX: when it is worth the drive
LAX wins on nonstops and, sometimes, on price. For a group of seven, a few hundred dollars saved per ticket can outweigh an extra hour in a car. Plan for two things.
- Rideshare and taxis do not pick up at the terminal curb. Since 2019 they have used the LAX-it lot next to Terminal 1, reached by a free shuttle or a walk from the nearer terminals. Follow the LAX-it signs, and check flylax.com for current pickup rules.
- The airport train is not running yet. The LAX Automated People Mover, which will link the terminals with the new rental-car center, was still in testing in fall 2026. ABC7 reported on September 25, 2026 that passenger service is not expected before early January 2027, and could slip again. Until then, rental-car customers ride shuttle buses. Check before you go.
The drive is the I-405 south most of the way. Landing in the middle of the day avoids the worst of it. A 5 p.m. weekday arrival can easily double the 45-minute estimate.
Holiday flights in 2026
Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026, and Christmas is a Friday. The days to watch are the Sunday after Thanksgiving, November 29, and the weekends either side of Christmas. Before Thanksgiving 2025, the TSA expected more than 3 million people on that Sunday alone, one of the busiest days in its history. If you can fly home on the Saturday or the Monday instead, do it, and leave extra time at whichever airport you choose.
The house's check-in is 4:00 p.m. and checkout is 11:00 a.m. A morning landing leaves a few hours to fill. Lunch near the pier and a walk on Main Street are about 10–15 minutes from the house. Do you need a rental car?
For most groups, yes. The house is in a residential neighborhood about 8 minutes by car from the beach, and Disneyland is about 25 minutes away. There is free parking on the property, and a Tesla Level 2 charger if you rent a Tesla. If you rent a different EV, ask in messages before you count on charging. Seven people with luggage rarely fit in one sedan, so book a minivan or a 7-seat SUV, or two cars. If you'd rather not drive, an XL rideshare from SNA or LGB is a short trip. From LAX it is a long and expensive one.
