Short answer: Take a morning lesson at Bolsa Chica State Beach, not under the pier and not at Huntington State Beach. California State Parks says novice surfers are not encouraged there, because the waves often break steep and hollow. Corky Carroll's Surf School teaches at Bolsa Chica, a sandy break with smaller waves, about 10 minutes from the house. In October 2026 a 2-hour private lesson was listed at $160 for one person, board and wetsuit included. On city beach, book a school the city permits. After rain, stay out of the water for 72 hours.
Which beach
Bolsa Chica is the place to start. Corky Carroll's holds every lesson there and describes a gentle, sandy-bottom break. In 2026 the lot is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. (gates close at 9 p.m.). Parking is $15 a vehicle, or $20 on summer weekends and holidays from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Cashless. Call (714) 377-5691 if a closure is posted.
City beach runs from Beach Boulevard north to Sea Point Avenue. Lifeguards cover it dawn to dusk all year. The beach closes 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wavehuggers, permitted at towers 8–12, meets at 11th Street and PCH and calls the north side a smoother beginner wave. Stay off the pilings. City safety tips say to keep clear of the pier and the jetties.
Huntington State Beach, south of Beach Boulevard, can wait. State Parks cites sandbars off the Santa Ana River jetties and tells novices not to surf there. Phone (714) 536-1454. The bonfire guide covers the fire rings for after you get out.
Lessons that exist, and 2026 prices
Prices below are what the school sites showed in October 2026. Call before you pay.
Corky Carroll's (714-969-3959) teaches ages 4 and up for two hours, board and wetsuit included. Its price table lists $160 for one, $133 each for two, $127 each for three, and $115 each for four or more. Lessons start as early as 8 a.m., because afternoon wind makes the waves harder. A FAQ on the same page still says $155 for one person, so confirm. Let's Go Surf School also teaches by tower 16, ages 8 and up, with at most three students per instructor (562-235-9083).
The city's list: Little Surf Co. (towers 14–22), Wavehuggers (8–12), HB Surf School (3–5), McKinnon Surf Lessons (4–6), Orange County Surf Coaching (7–13) and Clint Carroll Surf School (11–19). Little Surf Co. meets at Goldenwest and PCH, at the base of the stairs, with boards and wetsuits. Two hours is $179 for one, $279 for two, and $130 each for three or more (657-464-4190). Wavehuggers (310-910-9099) brings boards and wetsuits to the north side and lists lessons from 8 a.m. until sunset.
Boards, water temperature, wetsuits
Rent a soft-top. Corky's beginner boards are Stormblade soft-tops from a 9-foot Maxx to 6'6", and you can swap during the rental. A day rental is $50 with a wetsuit, typically 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jack's Surfboards, 101 Main Street, is open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and rents surfboards for $15 an hour or $40 a day (714-536-4516). It no longer rents wetsuits, so use it on a warm day or after a school has fitted you.
Surf-Forecast puts open-water temperatures around 55–61°F in early February and 64–72°F in early September. They suggest a 4/3mm suit plus 3mm boots for the February cold, and about a 3/2mm full suit for the September warmth. Water at the sand can differ after rain or near a river mouth. Ask the school that week. Those ranges were the published guide in October 2026.
When to go, and how to behave
Go in the morning. Corky cites the afternoon wind, and no official page names one best tide, so let the school choose the hour.
Surfline's rules are the ones to know: surf at your level, do not drop in on the person closest to the peak, do not paddle around someone who is waiting, paddle out wide, and wear a leash. The city beach page lists the leash rule too.
Surf near a staffed tower and ask the guard about conditions. A yellow flag with a solid black circle is the blackball. City code 13.08.120 says only swimming and bathing are allowed within 200 yards while it is displayed. Read the tower, because the hours change. In a rip, swim parallel to shore, then in. Shuffle your feet for stingrays, and do not jump from the pier.
The 72 hours after rain
The Orange County Health Care Agency says stormwater can make the ocean unsuitable for swimming for at least 72 hours after rain, and to avoid runoff on the sand. Check OC Beach Info or call 714-433-6400. If the water is off, use the rainy-day guide and move the lesson to the last dry day of the trip.
A four-day trip from the house
Check-in is 4:00 p.m. and checkout is 11:00 a.m. The house sleeps 7, has a washer and dryer for wetsuits, and is about 8 minutes from the beach. Stays run up to 30 nights, and weekly stays get 9% off.
- Day 1: Check in, watch a session from the pier, and book the morning. Skip the water if it rained in the last three days.
- Day 2: An 8:00 a.m. lesson at Bolsa Chica, or with a city-permitted school nearer the pier. Wash the suits. A clear evening is a fire ring. See the bonfire guide for the 10 p.m. curfew.
- Day 3: A second lesson or a Corky rental on the same beach. The kids guide covers a dry afternoon, including Disneyland about 25 minutes away.
- Day 4: Optional short session. Bolsa Chica opens at 6 a.m. and Corky rentals typically start near 8 a.m., so return the board before 11 a.m. checkout. Call that morning.
For the hours you are dry, the things-to-do guide covers the pier and Tuesday Surf City Nights.
