Rainy Day in Huntington Beach: What to Do with Kids and Groups (and When to Skip the Ocean)

Short answer: If it rains during your Huntington Beach trip, stay out of the ocean for 72 hours after the rain stops, even once the sun is back. Runoff carries bacteria to the beach. For the wet day itself, the best indoor picks for a family or group are the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach (open daily 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., about 25 minutes from the house), Discovery Cube Orange County in Santa Ana (daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), and the free Huntington Beach Art Center on Main Street. Or stay in: the house has a pool table, darts, a Nintendo Switch 2 and an 82-inch TV.

This guide is for a family or group with a Huntington Beach trip booked for November or December who just saw rain in the forecast. It covers what is safe, what is open on the holidays, what it costs, and how to fill the day without driving all over Orange County.

First: the ocean after rain

This is the part visitors miss. When it rains, storm drains, creeks and rivers flush street runoff onto the beach. The Surfrider Foundation notes that California EPA advises the "72-hour rule": stay out of the water during rain and for three days after it.

  • Skip swimming, surf lessons, boogie boarding and tide-pool wading for 72 hours after a real rain.
  • Keep kids away from runoff on the sand. Orange County's beach page, OCBeachInfo, says "beach users should avoid contact with any runoff on the beach during dry or wet weather conditions," and that swimmers should avoid water near draining storm drains, creeks and rivers.
  • Walking the sand and the Pier is fine. The advice is about touching the water and runoff, not being on the beach.
  • Check before you go back in. OCBeachInfo lists any current ocean, harbor and bay advisories. If the water is brown, wait, whatever the calendar says.

If your trip is short and the rain comes early, plan the surf lesson for the end of the stay, not the day after the storm.

Indoor options within a short drive

Aquarium of the Pacific, Long Beach

The biggest rain-day win for kids. The Aquarium of the Pacific is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with longer hours on some days. General admission is $49.95 for adults, $34.95 for children 3–11 and $46.95 for seniors 62+. Reservations are required on weekends and holidays, so book ahead for a Saturday or Thanksgiving weekend. It is closed on December 25. It is about 25 minutes from the house.

Discovery Cube Orange County, Santa Ana

Discovery Cube at 2500 N. Main Street has more than 80 hands-on science exhibits, including a car-building raceway, a moon-rover course and the new Dino Quest, which is included with admission. It is open every day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Its FAQ lists general admission from $23 for children 14 and under, $26 for adults and $23 for seniors 62+, and says prices can vary by day. Children under 14 need an adult with them. It is closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Bowers Museum, Santa Ana

For a group of adults, or older kids who like art and history, the Bowers Museum is on the same street at 2002 N. Main Street. It is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It is closed Mondays, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Check its site for current ticket prices.

Downtown Huntington Beach: free galleries and the surf museum

The Huntington Beach Art Center at 538 Main Street has free admission to its exhibitions. Gallery hours are Tuesday 12–8 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday 12–6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 12–5 p.m. Its holiday-season show, Inspired, runs November 14 to December 18, 2026.

The International Surfing Museum lists its new home at 525 Main Street, a short walk away. Its hours and fees differ between listings after the move, so call 714-960-3483 before you go. Pair the two with lunch on Main Street and a walk on the Pier if the rain lets up.

Or make the house the plan

A wet day is easier when the rental is somewhere you want to be. This house sleeps 7 in 4 bedrooms with 2.5 baths. For a day indoors it has:

  • A Brunswick Gold Crown pool table and an electronic dartboard. Run a bracket: everyone plays, losers pick dinner.
  • A Nintendo Switch 2, board games and an 82-inch TV with wireless surround sound for a movie afternoon.
  • A full kitchen with quartz counters and dining for the group. A rainy day is a good day for a slow-cooked dinner.
  • An in-unit washer and dryer for wet jackets and sandy towels.
  • The BBQ island under a louvered pergola for when the rain stops.

See the full amenity list.

A sample rainy day for a family of 4 to 7

  • Morning: Check the National Weather Service forecast for Huntington Beach. Book timed aquarium tickets if it is a weekend.
  • 9:30 a.m.: Drive to Long Beach. Spend the morning at the Aquarium of the Pacific.
  • Early afternoon: Lunch, then back to the house for a pool tournament and a nap for the little ones.
  • Evening: Movie night and a home-cooked dinner. If the sky clears, walk the Pier at sunset, but leave the swimsuits in the bag for three days.

Prefer Santa Ana? Swap the aquarium for Discovery Cube with the kids while the adults take the Bowers, a few minutes up the same street. Just not on a Monday, Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Rainy-day plans around the holidays

  • Thanksgiving, November 26, 2026: Discovery Cube and the Bowers are closed. See the Thanksgiving week guide for the Turkey Wobble and cooking dinner for 7.
  • Christmas Day: The aquarium, Discovery Cube and the Bowers are all closed. The Christmas and Cruise of Lights guide covers what runs that week.
  • New Year's Day: The Bowers is closed.
  • Whale boats: Rough seas can cancel trips. The whale-watching guide explains how to keep a backup day.
